New Twist may obsolete existing Lithium Batteries

Technology Review -- By combining the new cathode with the previously developed silicon anode, the team created a battery with an initial discharge of 630 watt-hours per kilogram of active ingredients. This represents an approximately 80 percent increase in the energy density over commercially available lithium-ion batteries, according to Stanford's Cui, who was a coauthor of a paper describing the work published last month in Nano Letters.

As the article points out, the technology has several serious problems.

Battery technology is still rapidly advancing. This means any company doing a large investment in scaling up commercial production risks being stuck with an investment in obsolete technology.

More power in less space as CAMEL1 says or more range for an electric car in the same space. Unfortunately, the article didn't mention how long charging for the battery will take.

Hopefully this technology pans out and we can get a battery for our laptops that lasts much longer. Perhaps, also we can get longer lasting batteries for vehicles (needed for hybrids and all electric).

technology drives our economy since we don't really produce anything in this country anymore, so it shouldn't be a surprise battery technology is getting better. There always has to be an economic stimulus (bad choice of words) to achieve this, however.

So when can I buy my first electrical car with the new technology? Anything else is hash. Year after year, the scientists will continue to make last years batteries obsolete, so why waste $40,000 on a car who's battery system will be obsolete in another year?
