North America driving season wraps up

GasBuddy Blog -- As summer comes to a close, so does the peak demand season for motor gasoline in the United States. Typically, gasoline prices weaken in the autumn months as demand for gasoline drops. Here are some supply and demand numbers from this summer and how this year compared to last year and years past.

We began summer 2010 (Memorial Day weekend) with nearly 219 million barrels of gasoline in inventories. This compared to 203 million in 2009, 209 million in 2008, 198 million in 2007, and 209 million in 2006.

We're finishing summer 2010 (Labor Day weekend) with 225.5 million barrels of gasoline available. This compares to 205 million in 2009, 194 million in 2008, 191 million in 2007, and 206 million in 2006.

tomok: you hit that nail on the head! As long as consumers don't make the connection between diesel and higher cost of goods (esp. groceries) we will never see lower prices for diesel again. And the gas prices long have decoupled from a normal supply and demand system.

sabob: it wasn't like that all the time. Only since about 2007/2008 has diesel gone higher and higher. Why? Because Pig Oil CAN and truckers (the main consumers of diesel) don't have enough of a voice.

How about diesel fuel, why don't someone post the inventories for it?? Maybe then we wouldn't be paying 40 cents more per gallon. Highway robbery!!

‘supply for this time of year is the highest its been since records started being kept in 1990.’
Lower fuel prices at the pump would be nice but it will never happen when big oil, refineries and those speculators can manipulate the fuel price.

More supply and less demand should equate to lower prices in the real world.

Still waiting for lower prices in Utah (now about 2.87 for regular). Meanwhile I saw 2.37 in Kansas City. Slight difference.

In order to save money people chose STAYCATIONS. They visited local points of interest rather than spend money on fuel to travel. It's good for the local economy & many people have rarely visited tourist spots in their own back yard.

While driving may be up slightly this summer, MPG is much higher plus ethanol usage is up, thus gasoline and diesel use rates are down. With hybrids and electrics making debuts early next model year (Ford is planning on a March 2011 update making 2012 models then), this will continue (0-3% more driving, but the average MPG goes up 3-6% and ethanol will be allowed to get to 15% from 10% yielding a 3-5% drop in gasoline demand next summer). The 2012 summer will see more PHEVs which will hasten this trend of demand falling.

So what your saying is there is price manipulation because stockpiles are up, use is down, but we keep paying more. Maybe someone should look into this?

You think with gasoline demand going down, the refinery could produce more diesel and home heating oil to avoid the winter rise in those fuels.

Lower gas prices are a VERY good thing (unless they are the result of a weak economy).

I'll take it.

People did less driving this summer they didn!t have the money. If gas had been $2.00 a gallon where it sould have been they would have done a lot more.
