And the paragraph just before your quote from the NYTimes says: "The study released this week, done by scientists at Duke University, suggested that gas drilling causes methane gas to leak into people's water and sometimes their homes (Greenwire, May 9). But methane contamination is not caused by injecting chemicals down the well. It is caused by bad well construction during drilling."
While I might agree that ProPublica's headline was deceptive, if you actually read the article, it puts the blame on drilling. They specifically state "The researchers did not find evidence that the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing had contaminated any of the wells they tested, allaying for the time being some of the greatest fears among environmentalists and drilling opponents."

Yeah, the GB link routine is a little picky. The url can't be too long and can't contain certain special characters. And the text can't contain square brackets.
One way around the problems with the url itself is to use TinyURL.

Sorry, GB software glitch not supporting that link?
You can likely google "Baffled About Fracking" NY Times for the full story.

Absolutely rj, here's a quote from the author of the Duke Study,
[L=http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2011/05/13/text deleted hot-button issue is fracking," said Robert Jackson, the Duke professor who authored the study, in an interview. But, he said, "I believe it's more about the drilling than the fracking." [/L]
And from the conclusion of the Duke study, which I've read several times: "The first is physical displacement of gas-rich deep solutions from the target formation. Given the lithostatic and hydrostatic pressures for 1-2 km of overlying geological strata, and our results that appear to rule out the rapid movement of deep brines to near the surface, we believe that this mechanism is unlikely."
LOL, you don't see Propublica pointing that out do you???

drpepperTX - "Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!"
You mean like arguing that the findings of the Duke study were "perverted", then, as proof, linking to a UTA study that doesn't even mention Duke?
Why not find something in the actual Duke study to support your position?

No rj, water does not burn, it turns to steam at a temperature above 212 degrees F. There has to be some flammable vapor IN the water to burn.
I also must laugh at your source! Propublica? Really? Even at that they pervert the findings of the Duke study, which if you had bothered to do your homework, which you really struggle with, shows that gas naturally occurs and has always occurred in water wells in that and many other areas.HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

drpepperTX - "Sure would rj, problem is tap water does not burn."
Apparently it does in some areas of northeastern Pennsylvania and southern New York State.

Sure would rj, problem is tap water does not burn. Although we have been using heated water for power for a long time, it's called steam.

Wouldn't it solve our gasoline problems if we could burn tap water for fuel?

Let’s hope that reality has begun to sink in at the EPA and they will actually begin listening to scientists and industry experts rather than taking all their testimony from Eco-nazis like Josh Fox (of the fakeumentary Gasland) and a collection of Hollywood wannabes.

If they've already tested the water wells - then what's the problem?! Companies need to be held liable for killing people to make a buck!
